My Story

Cindy was meant to be ours.  She came into our lives in about January 1994.  We had been married and in Australia for about 6 months - the only 6 months I have spent in my life without a pet.  I felt wierd - The stirrings of my maternal instinct I guess (a month later we conceived our first child).

Cindy was a giveaway in the paper which was perfect at the time because we really didn't have spare money to buy a pet.  We went to see her without any expectations.  What we saw was this gorgeous ball of grey and white fluff scared out of her wits who wouldn't come anywhere near us.  I fell in love, especially after hearing her story.  She was 18 months old and her original owner had moved Interstate leaving Cindy with a neighbour who had cats.  She had her name changed and tried to live with her new owner.  Cindy didn't get along with the existing pets though and so we came along.

We took her home and she went into hiding for weeks. Slowly she came around and got used to us.  After a few weeks she took to standing guard over my chair whenever I was sat down.  We found out soon after I was pregnant with our first son.

Life then settled into a routine.  We weren't supposed to have pets as we were renting so we had to hide the scratched fly screens and pretend she wasn't ours!   Over the next 12 years She tolerated 2 house moves, the additions of 2 noisy boys, 2 boisterous dogs and 2 more cats (one at a time - one died)  She was clearly disgusted by the whole thing but she was faithful and never wandered.

She got sick about 18 months before she died.  We found out she had Kidney failure.  She recovered from an immediate crisis (spending time in hospital on a drip and medication) but she slowly deteriorated, getting thinner and thinner.  We didn't want to say goodbye and kind of denied her illlness and old age for a while.

Eventually on 11 January 2007 we put her to sleep.

We miss Cindy, but her spirit still visits, we still hear her Miaow and see her wandering round the house...
