My Story

My mom brought Sunshine home on July 23, 2005. She had been at work and had rescued her from being sent to the pound. Sunshine was a fear-nipper, and it took about a week for her to learn to trust me, and a month for my mom. I named her Sunshine because she was the sunshine of my life. When I would cry, she would lick away my tears. When my mom and I would fight, she would stand between us as the objects my mom threw at me missed me. When i would come home from school, there Sunshiine would be on the top step of the porch, her whole body wiggling. We would give each other kisses and I would give her a belly rub. She knew when it was time to go to bed, and I always told her good night. Many times I snuck her into the bed with me and sang her to sleep. Sunshine was my daughter- she didn't know otherwise. I would watch TV with my mom, and Sunshine and I would be in our chair. When she would fall asleep, I would let her seep there.

The day Sunshine died, I was near Orlando. I came home, and she didn't bark or anything. My cousin, Stephanie, was in fron of me. She looked around and that's when I heard it. "Oh, my God!"  I looked, and Sunshine was lying on the ground. Even though I knew better, I thought she was asleep. I called out her name and ran to her. I shook her lightly and told her to wake up- that it wsn't funny. But she was stiff, and she was dead. The next few hours were a blur. I called my dad and mom and best friend and for the two hours it took Randi to get there, I shooed the flies away and told Sunshiine to wake up. I had a funeral for her, and to this day i will never forget her loyalty.

Even in death, she was still waiting for me to come home.

perhaps if i had come sooner, she would still be alive.
