My Story

I found Elly at her four siblings abandoned at my work in early November last year. They weren't even a week old and their eyes were still closed.
I took them home and decided to raise and look after them.
Elly was the runt and she was tiny. I had a lot of difficulty feeding her in the first four days. Finally she took to the bottle and was doing really well.
I cleaned her eyes with a warm face washer and I was the first thing she ever saw.
The vet was concerned because she was so little and even suggested putting her down then and there to spare us both any pain. I couldn't do it, I knew she was a survivor. My parents and family were also telling me to prepare myself, runts often die.
My husband and I decided we would keep her (although previously had no plans to ever own a cat). We named her Elly after the Hebrew word "EL" meaning strength and overcoming adversity. We also ended up keeping two others from the litter and ended up with three cats.
I also have a 16 year old Basenji dog "Jack" who has never had a good relationship with other animals so we were a little worried about how he would accept these new family additions. He was wary of the other two "Loki" and "Isis" and he kept his distance from them. Elly was a different story, Jack loved her, he looked after her and kept her warm when the litter kicked her out of their bed.
They slept together and had a wonderful relationship.
My heart soared when the vet gave her the all clear and said she was healthy and happy.

We decided that they would be inside cats. My husband had previously owned cats and both had been hit by cars so he was wary and I was worried about their size. They are little cats given their awful start to life.

We needed to get them desexed. A simple procedure and it was time, they were old enough.
I dropped them off at the vet and went to work. At work I became ill and had to go home. Just after lunch time the vet called. There had been a complication with one of my cats and they didn't make it.
I was stunned, I didnt believe them and told them to stop the joke because it was sick.

It was true, Elly had an allergic reaction to the sleeping drugs and she had passed away.

My grief was horrific. I couldn't deal with the fact she was gone, I kept telling the vet to stop lying.

My little angel had entered this world without a chance and she had survivied where so many had said she couldn't. She bought light into our home and warmth to my gorgeous dog Jack.

She was a beautiful soul, so loving and caring.

RIP Elly, you will be missed every day and I promise people will remember you!
