My Story

Savannah was my first baby.  A good friend of ours had a dog who had puppies.  She was giving us one for free.   I went over there when the puppies were a week old.  She asked me which one I wanted.  I said I'd like the all white one.  She said that we had to find out the sex first because if the white one was a boy that puppy was promised to someone.  So I carefully picked her up and turned her over and said, "It's a girl."  My friend then said, "She's yours."  I remember she was so tiny in my hand.  Her eyes weren't even open.  I started the next day thinking of a name.  I was reading a book titled Midnight in the Garden of Good and Evil  the story was set in Savannah, GA.  I was totally engrossed in this book so I decided to name my new puppy Savannah.  My husband gave her the middle name of Ray. Though she had quite a few nicknames.  My husband called her Nanna.  My parents called her Vanna.  I called her Pumpkin.  I'm really surprised that she even knew her real name.  Savannah grew up to be a beautiful dog.  She was loved by all who met her.  I don't know how many times I would hear people mention how dangerous she must be since she was part pitt bull.  Nothing was further from the truth.  She was the dog that would let our nieces and nephews pull on her ears and tail.  She would take it all and not hurt anyone.

She was the funniest little dog too.  In our house we could not close the bathroom door.  She would sit outside it an howl.  So one day I was in there taking care of things and she came in.  I thought she was going to lay down on the bathroom rug but instead she peed there.  Of course I couldn't do anything because I was in the middle of something myself.  All I could do was laugh.  When my husband came home I told him about her peeing in the bathroom.  I said, "Now if we can just get her to go in the toilet and flush we have it made."  She made life worth living and I had lots of smiles with her.

Savannah was mainly my husband's dog.  Or should I say he was her human.  However, whenever she was scared she wanted to be by her Mommy.  Savannah was scared of thunderstorms and fireworks.  We woudl both sit together on the couch and she would lay her head on my stomach.  Then all would be right with the world again.

Savanah's favorite game was keep away.  She would grab anything like a piece a paper, a sock, a ball, etc. then when you tried to reach for it she would growl and wag her tail.  It became a game to her.  So I started to play along.  I would look at her and say "Savannah can I touch it."  She would growl and I would laugh.  Then our other dog Sandy would start barking and get too overly excited so we'd have to quit.  But it was fun for a little while.

I have so many memories of Savannah these are just a few of the really good ones.  She was the best dog a family could have.  We really do miss her a lot.  My daughter was born in January and it saddens me that she will not get to play with her and love on her.   I just know that she was really really loved by all her friends and family and her sister really misses her.
