My Story

Vincent Onions - May 1, 2000 to December 25, 2008

In early June 2000, I adopted 2 kittens, Vinnie and his sister Minnie, from the local Humane Society.  When we picked them up, Vinnie was relaxing at the bottom of a large box with his brothers and sisters climbing all over him.  I decided I wanted to adopt two cats that day and my brother was the first one to notice his laid back attitude and cool personality by the way he was letting all his siblings climb over him while he watched. My brother decided we should adopt Vinnie and I choose his sister, Minnie.

In the early months, Vinnie would coming running to his sister when she would cry.   It was so cute.  Once he arrived at her side she would calm down and stop crying.  When Vinnie was one year old, I got married and moved in with my husband to our first place.  One hot summer day we decided to open the front door and just keep the screen door shut.  As we were watching tv, Vinnie walked up to the screen door and pulled himself up to see through the screen.  Neither he nor we were aware that there was a big dog sitting just on the other side of the screen door.  The dog barked loudly at the sight of Vinnie and thus he took off like a bolt of lightning through the house, up to the highest window and tor down the curtains. He thought the dog was in the house. I had never seen a cat run that fast.  It was really funny.

A year later we moved to a condo that we purchased and remodeled.  Vinnie was there for it all.  We lived there for a year and a half and during that time, we realized that Vinnie had a huge interest in water.  I bought a decorative fountain for the house and he started drinking out of it.  He also liked to try and take drinks out of our cups.  He also loved to try and drinking the last milk out of our cereal bowls.  I let him have the last of the cereal milk on occasion and he loved it.

One of my favorite things that I will never forget about my meesay was his pushing.  We called him pushing boo. He loved to push like a little kitten does on his mother.  He did that from the very beginning.  I had to stop letting him sleep on my bed becasue he would not quit with the pushing and it would keep me up at night.  If he was in the same room and noticed me sit on the couch, he would be up in my lap in seconds pushing.  He loved to do that.  He even pushed on me the day before his passing on Christmas Eve.

He was my constant companion.  Especially during the last year when I decided to work from home.  I was home everyday and he was always there wanting to see what I was up to.  I would bend down and pet his head or pull his ear every time I would walk past him.  His ears were my favorite part.  He also loved to come in the bathroom with me when I would take my baths in the morning.  He would stretch himself out over the edge of the tub to try and reach for a drink of water.  Then he and Minnie would sit by the bath tub until I was all clean.

Minnie and Vinnie were together 24/7 for 8 years and 7 months.  She misses him terribly.  It has only been 4 full days since we had to put Vinnie to sleep and Minnie has been crying out in the night wondering were he is.  She rarely meows at night like that, so I know she realizes he is not here and expects him to run to her.  I am sure she misses him as much as I do.  I am trying to give her all the attention I can and her being here brings me great comfort.

There is so much more I could share.  Vinnie was an amazing cat.  He was my best friend.  I miss him terribly.
